Jeff Buchbinder Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Instructor

About Jeff Buchbinder:

I started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2015 after a coworker dragged me to a class because I liked watching MMA. I went in thinking I would enjoy striking more, but I quickly fell in love with grappling instead.

I trained for seven years at Long Island MMA under Gregg DePasquale, with Brian Michelino and Brent Appiarius also having a big influence on my development, and I received my brown belt in 2022. After moving to Charlotte, I spent some time checking out different gyms before finding Art of Motion in 2023, where the culture and Aaron’s approach to jiu-jitsu immediately felt like home.

I have competed a bit over the years and have won some and lost plenty, including proudly medaling at Pan Ams after losing every match and tying for third by default, which might still be my greatest athletic accomplishment.

While I enjoy training hard, what I really love about jiu-jitsu is teaching and sharing it with other people. I first started teaching as a beginner instructor at LIMMA, and that experience shaped how I approach coaching today. My game is centered around butterfly guard, leg locks, and sweeps, with a top game that focuses on north-south pressure and making people uncomfortable enough to force mistakes.

My favorite submissions are the inside heel hook and the D’Arce, and despite working on it for about ten years, my guillotine is still a work in progress. My teaching philosophy is simple: if you understand why something works, you can make it your own. I also have a strict no-jerk policy. Be kind, give your training partners time to tap, and everyone gets better.

When I am not on the mats, I am usually playing video games or doing graphic design, but I am always happy to talk jiu-jitsu and learn something new.
